What is Flickr?


Flickr
is an image and video hosting website,web services suite, and online community platform. In addition to being a popular Web site for users to share personal photographs, the service is widely used by bloggers as a photo repository.
Flickr is a free, ad supported site. Anyone can see the photos.


Ownership and Development


  • Flickr was developed by Ludicorp, a Vancouver-based company that launched Flickr in February 2004.
  • Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake are the founders of Flickr.
  • Yahoo owns Flickr
  • Flickr was created unintentionally by engineers
  • Originated from an online multi-player game


Facts
  • As of November 2008, it claims to host more than 3 billion images.
  • Flickr's traffic grew 448% to 3.4 million from December 2004 to December 2005, according to Internet measurement firm Nielsen/NetRatings. In the nearly 12 months since Yahoo purchased it, the site went from 250,000 registered users to more than 2 million.
  • Flickr only has a few true competitors, the only major ones are called Zoomr, Riya, Tabblo.









Flickr suggests in addition to submitting a photo, help organize images by using tags. This allows searchers to find images related to particular topics, such as places or subject matter.
